Award 2019

Berlin-based artist Britta Thie studied Fine Arts at the Kunstakademie Munster and at the Berlin University of the Arts with scholarship of the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes.

In 2011/12 she received a DAAD scholarship to stay at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York. In 2013 she graduated as “Meisterschüler” with Hito Steyerl at the UdK Berlin. 2015 she released the web series Translantics in which she is director, author and protagonist, on behalf of the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt and Arte Creative. In 2016, she staged the play I’MDB – A live drama about the tragedy of rating at the Munich Kammerspiele. The live performance was released in 2017 under the title The Superhost on Arte.tv.

Britta Thie’s work has been shown in various exhibitions, among others at the Anthology Film Archives, New York; MUMOK, Vienna; Auto Italia, London; Sandy Brown Gallery, Berlin; KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin; Kunstverein Göttingen; Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt; and the Julia Stoschek Collection Berlin. In 2015 she received a scholarship from the Kunstfonds Foundation. From 2016 to 2017, Britta Thie was guest professor for performance at the Fine Arts department of the Offenbach University of Applied Sciences.

Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin are Studio Formafantasma, an Italian designers duo based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. 

Since their studies at Design Academy Eindhoven Formafantasma has developed a coherent body of work characterised by experimental material investigations and explored issues, such as the relationship between tradition and local culture, critical approaches to sustainability and the significance of objects as cultural conduits.

Their work has been presented and published internationally. Museums, such the MoMA, New York; Victoria & Albert, London; the Metropolitan Museum, New York; Chicago Art Institute; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; TextielMuseum Tilburg; Stedelijk Museum ’s-Hertogen- bosch; Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam; MUDAC Lausanne; Mint Museum of Craft and Design in North Carolina; and the MAK in Vienna have all acquired Formafantasma’s designs for their permanent collections.

Anna Dickinson studied at the Royal College of Art, London where she now is a visiting lecturer.

She runs a glass studio in London which gained recognition for explorations in electroforming onto blown glass. Through non-functional sculptural works she is exploring the form of the vessel. Her works may combine blown, cast and cut glass elements as well as other materials such as metals, wood, and high quality plastics /PTFE etc.
These pieces can weigh anything up to 25 kilos and take over a year to complete.

Anna Dickinson's work has been acquired by Public collections such as The Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo and the Corning Glass Museum in New York.

Claudia Perren is the director and CEO of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation since August 2014.

Before that, she taught design, curatorial practice, history and theory of architecture and art for eight years at the University of Sydney's Department of Architecture, Design and Urban Planning.

She is interested in hybrids between disciplines, that are questioning space to redefine it. Results of her research, teaching and curatorial work have been published in numerous publications and exhibitions in Australia, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, the Czech Republic, Singapore, Spain, Finland, Estonia and Switzerland.

Katsumi Asaba studied at Kuwasawa Design School Tokyo. The school was founded in 1954 by Yoko Kuwasawa and was supported by Walter Gropius' moral encouragement.

Today, Asaba is not only president of the school and passionate councilor of the Japan Table Tennis Association — he is one of Japan's most renowed, multi award winning designers, who shaped much of the culture of typography in Japan.

He is a committee member of Tokyo Art Directors Club, chairman of the Tokyo Type Directors Club, president of JAGDA, a representative of Japan to the Alliance Graphique Internationale and he is a visiting professor at Tokyo Zokei University and Kyoto Seika University.
For the Kuwasawa Design School and Misawa Homes Company he is actively involved through various projects in dealing with the legacy of the Bauhaus in Japan.
